Driving License: Everything you Need to Know

As of July 1st, 2020, the process to get a driver’s license in the state of California will change. The driving portion of the test will now be five hours long instead of the current three hours. There will be no change to the written test.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles says that the new, longer driving test is meant to “ensure that all new drivers have the skills and experience they need to drive safely on California’s roads.”

The changes come as part of AB Passenger Transport 1785, which was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in October 2019. The bill also requires that applicants for a driver’s license take an additional six hours of behind-the-wheel training with a professional instructor before they can take the driving test.
